Sport Builders was officially started by company president, Matt Jacobs, in 2000. But his preparation started much earlier. Matt started out as a tennis player, playing #1 in high school and college and achieving a top ten ranking in the Middle States area.

After graduation, he became a certified teaching professional and jumped at the opportunity to purchase the club where he was working, Hillcrest Racquet Club in Reading, PA. The club had six indoor hard courts and four outside Har-Tru® courts. With lots of courts to maintain and a tight budget, he learned how to do most of the work himself.

In 1997, one of his club members asked if he could do some work on the private Har-Tru court at his home. That was the start of his court business. Over the next several years, he added more and more clients, from private homeowners to tennis and country clubs.

In 2000, he separated the court business from the club and officially started Sport Builders. As the business grew, hard court resurfacing and new construction were added to the list of services. By 2004 the company had worked on over 200 courts of all kinds — tennis, basketball, volleyball and in-line hockey— for clubs, municipalities, schools and private homeowners in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

Today, although he still owns the tennis club, his family manages it for him, allowing him to focus on Sport Builders. "My background as both a player and a club owner gives me an appreciation for the issues my clients have with their courts. As a player you're frustrated when you're getting bad bounces or the court surface isn't playing well. As an owner, you worry about the safety and attractiveness of the courts and the budget you have to work with."

This unique perspective has helped turn Sport Builders into the fastest growing sport construction business in the region.
